Art Van Damme (1920-2010), California – USA

Born April 9th 1920 in Norway, Michigan, and brought up in Chicago, Art Van Damme took up the piano accordion in 1929 at the age of nine, and was classically trained before discovering jazz as a teenager – inspired by the recordings of Benny Goodman. In 1941 he joined Ben Bernie's band as an accordionist, then from 1945 to 1960 he worked for NBC, performing on ‘The Dinah Shore Show’, ‘Tonight’, ‘The Dave Garroway Show’, and other radio and TV shows with Garroway.He recorded 130 episodes of the 15-minute ‘The Art Van Damme Show’ for NBC Radio, and from the 1940s onwards also enjoyed a successful and extended recording career. Van Damme toured Europe and was also popular with jazz listeners in Japan, and regularly won the US ‘Downbeat’ magazine reader's poll for his instrument. He also toured in Russia and New Zealand. In 2005, Art Van Damme, Myron Floren and Dick Contino – three all-American accordion legends – were all honoured at the Las Vegas Accordion Convention, and the following year Art was the chief guest at the ‘Accordions International 2006’ festival, held at Caister, UK.Art Van Damme, in his prime years, played so many gigs in clubs, hotels and concert stages across the USA and Europe that it is said that he never needed to do any practice. He was constantly in action, developing and honing his skills and repertoire, pioneering the use of the accordion as a jazz lead instrument. So influential was Art’s playing style that he has influenced most of the western world’s jazz accordionists. One musicologist made the following neat comment: “The hippest cat ever to swing an accordion, Art Van Damme dared go where no man had gone before: jazz accordion”.Art Van Damme died on February 15th 2010. He was 89 years old, and had been ill with pneumonia for several weeks. He had three children and six grandchildren. Although he had retired to Arizona then Scaramento, California, he continued to perform nearly to the age of 90.

History

Development of the accordion is generally thought to have been inspired by the Chinese Cheng, the first known instrument to use a free vibrating reed to create sound. This instrument was invented approximately 5,000 years ago. It consists of a series of Bamboo pipes, a resonator box, a wind chamber, and a mouthpiece It has a shape that resembles a phoenix and was introduced to European musicians in 1777.
The first accordions were invented in the early nineteenth century. In Germany, Christian Buschmann introduced and patented an instrument called the "Handaeoline" in 1822. It had an expandable bellows, a portable keyboard, and a series of free vibrating reeds inside. Seven years later, Cyrillus Damian refined the instrument by adding four bass keys that produced chords. He was awarded a patent for this instrument, which he called an accordion.
Over the next several decades, various improvements were made to the accordion. One major modification was made in 1850, when the Chromatic accordion was introduced. The early Diatonic accordions produced different notes when the bellows were drawn opened and pressed closed. The chromatic versions produce the same note regardless of the action of the bellows. Steel reeds were incorporated into the instrument in 1857. As several early companies, such as Hohner, Soprani, and Dallape, began manufacturing the instrument in the 1860s, other changes were made. The addition of more bass keys was particularly important. By the early twentieth century, manufacturers had settled on a standard size and shape for the instruments, which eventually led to the modern accordion.
The incorporation of electronics into accordions began around World War II. At first, they were wired to allow a hookup through an electronic organ. Eventually, accordions were connected to electronic boxes of their own, allowing for sound generation, amplification and speakers. A recent development is the inclusion of Musical Instrument Digital Interface (MIDI) systems with conventional accordions. Instruments which have MIDI contacts can be connected to any MIDI-compatible device, such as synthesizers, electronic pianos, and sound modules.

On this day, the CIA will coordinate an annual world wide celebration, in a unified global crusade to promote the diversity of the accordion and the outstanding artists that play it.Already existing on a national basis, on various days, in many countries around the world, World Accordion Day is a unique global opportunity to promote public awareness of the accordion, an instrument without boundaries, one that spans all cultures and musical genres. The CIA’s first World Accordion Day will be held on 6th May 2009, the 180th birthday of the accordion. Accordionists from around the world are invited to join this inaugural celebration, while paying homage to the accordion. Hohner’s former chief designing engineer Venanzio Morino started making instruments according to his own vision in 1936. The Morino legacy lives on in the series which bears his name. An outsanding feature of the Morino is its tone chamber: an additional resonance chamber in the keyboard, which amplifies warm bass and mid-range frequencies while simultaneously reducing shrill overtones. Its unique sound has always been the Morino’s trademark. The wooden core keyboard found in all Morinos features almost frictionless guide elements and is a true engineering feat. It not only ensures that each key has an exceptionally easy and precise action, but also reduces wear. The Morino V chorus construction offers exceptionally varied and musically interesting combinations of voices, thanks to the fifth reed block which creates the so-called “triple tremolo” effect and allows additional tonal variation. The Tutti register also sounds more voluminous in the Morino V. In addition, the extra weight of the accordion has been reduced by almost 4 1/2 pounds (in comparison to earlier instruments) due to a design revision. With 41 melody keys and 13 chorus combinations, the Morino V 120 is a top-line instrument which is not only suited for orchestra use, but also for professional soloists.
